canakkale war research centre

The constructions are imagined as present extension of the historical situation and are represented by monumental and dramatic images.

The battle od 1915 is a research theme, in which hundreds of symbolic meanings can be extracted: heroic and epic stories spread all over the world. On the other hand, over 100 years after the war the traces of everyday life of that period begin to be discussed more and more frequently. On this page, the simple, ordinary, human details hide behind the national heroic stories and the dimensions beyond winning or losing the war.

Assuming that the buildings have a role to remind the population of the historical situation, the Çanakkale 1915 Research Center should reflect both sides of the war. How war is dramatic, epic and monumental for the nations and how it is for individuals, in the middle of daily life, withheld between life and death, between fear of death and the joy of living. The design structure must include both meanings.

The bid for the contest project also supports this duality. In the near future, the neighboring areas will be surrounded by shopping malls and the land that is expected to be among the functions such as housing and dormitory will be transformed into an area in the city, as the city center is on the growth axis.

Sharp and defined stone walls, staggered with each other creates the monumental and fascinanting part of the design. The connection areas between them host the daily life functions, such as a cafeteria, a theater, and a library. The external walls also hosts elements for open air activities such as a basketball field, a children playground and a skater park. The central area, cut in two by a roof covered passage, host the research centre. The central roof to ceiling hallway leads to smaller rooms where the research activity actually takes place.

The building has also underground area, in memory of the war shelters. Here are located deposits and archives.
